Is anyone else afraid to fly? To be clear, it’s not the actual flying that I am afraid of…it’s the plane. And more specifically, it’s the people on the plane. Not the people who talk too loudly on their cell phone or the people that think they own the armrest…it’s the sick ones.
According to Business Insider Magazine, scientists have found that people have an 80% chance of getting sick on an airplane if they sit in the wrong spot. What’s the wrong spot you ask? MY SPOT! If you are sitting within two rows of someone who is sick and you both aren’t wearing a mask and bathed in a bottle of Purel, you are in big trouble. And that’s exactly what happened to me.
Recently I returned from an extended trip in Switzerland where I traveled on six planes, countless trains, and three boats. I was ALMOST home in perfect health. And then it happened. That last 45-minute flight and someone was hacking their lungs out in the row behind me. Within 48 hours of landing, I was flat on my back in bed for a week. Two weeks later, my cough still lingered.
I was scheduled to get on another plane and all I could think about was what more could I do to protect myself. I literally ate Hall’s Defense Lozenges like they were cheese fries. I stocked up on more Purel and I unashamedly bought a box of disposable masks. Then I heard about the IV Nutritional Therapy treatments offered at the Strata Integrated Wellness Spa.
These treatments directly feed the body much-needed nutrients and minerals that boost your immune system. Now that’s what I’m talking about! This treatment is supposed to be much more effective than sucking on lozenges, swallowing vitamins in pill form, or drinking those concoctions you mix into a glass of water. By administering these nutrients intravenously, they skip the body’s filtration and digestion process and go directly into the blood system providing maximum benefit to your cells.
Some of the vitamins and minerals included in these “IV cocktails” are Vitamins B & C, Zinc, and Salinium. A medical doctor, Dr. Mike Barber, M.D., meets with each person before their treatment to determine what is the best “cocktail” to meet their needs and a registered nurse, Angie Barber, R.N., administers the IV and sits with you throughout the process. Some treatments take as little as 20 minutes, and some can take as long as an hour to an hour and a half depending on what issues are being addressed. While the syringe with the fluid mixture is quite large, the needle is small and with Nurse Barber’s expert touch, the treatment was not at all uncomfortable. In fact, it was quite pleasant and relaxing!
These treatments are great for a wide variety of issues including mine…fear of catching something on a plane…but they also address issues faced by allergy sufferers, athletes, stressed out executives, stressed out parents, stressed out students, must I go on? Most interestingly, these treatments are also used by a lot of oncology patients at the Strata Integrated Wellness Spa.
While the treatments are not inexpensive (they cost approximately $200 each), in my opinion, they are worth every penny. How much did it cost me to be sick and in bed for a week? How much does it cost long term to put your health at risk with a compromised immune system? Any opportunity I have to avoid that is well worth it. Plus, they offer a discount on packages of multiple treatments and members of the Garden of the Gods Club receive 10% off.
I had my first treatment the morning I got on a plane to travel cross country. And while I still scoured my seat and everything around it with disinfectant wipes, I had some extra peace of mind knowing that my immune system was in better shape to do battle against those germs!
